Commissioned for the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi’s Washington Street Park, “In the Key of Freedom” pays homage to the history and importance of Vicksburg in the American Civil War and incorporates a sound element as a nod to Vicksburg’s prominence in America’s musical heritage.

While acknowledging Vicksburg’s critical importance during the war, President Abraham Lincoln noted the city’s importance as “the Key to the South.” The sound element features 12 tones in tribute to the blues’ iconic 12 bar structure.
