So much for cookie cutter claims about creating art

Seymora seussicus, a large format, hand painted, 3D printed sculpture - Kevin CaronSo much for the belief that sculptors will pump out thousands of the same piece creating soulless cookie-cutter multiples.

Ironically, that charge was blown apart when my 46″ tall 3D-printed and hand-painted sculpture Seymora seussicus (right) got destroyed during shipping. (I am pretty sure it should have not been delivered upside down.)

The patron asked me to create a new piece, trusting me to create something that would, like Seymora was intended to, lend some fun and whimsy to a staid room.

Unfortunately, the silky rainbow filament that created the stripes in the sculpture’s upper section, is no longer available in 3 millimeter filament, which is what my 8-foot-tall Cerebus 3D Gigante 3D printer uses.

So much for even 2 of this design.

That would have been true regardless, though, because part of Seymora was hand painted. Now its replacement, Seymour seussicus (bottom right), would be entirely painted.

The third start on the print made it all the way in this multiday process.

Because it was going to be primed and painted, I used some Ryno filament for most of the structure and then finished it off with a black PLA.

Since I had the opportunity, I added another perimeter layer, making it 3, and beefed up the infill. The original design was plenty sturdy – it had been moved several times – but I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to tweak the design. The new sculpture is noticeably heavier, BTW.

The patron loves Seymour, so we’ll be shipping it to him soon. Right side up.
