Lighting 3D Printed Sculptures Beautifully

Solar Reactor, a contemporary 3D printed, lighted sculpture - Kevin CaronIf you’re a regular reader or follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, you know I’ve been playing around with lighting my 3D-printed sculptures.

Whether I can light them has been one of the biggest question I get when I show my 3D-printed sculptures.

So  that sent me on a quest to figure out the best way to light them, especially the sculptures in my new Wabi-Sabi series.

But just like creating a sculpture series, I’m always following the “What if ….”

The most recent sculpture I’ve lit is one titled Solar Reactor, and I approached it a different way than I have the others….

For the rest I 3D printed a base in which the light sat in the base and projected up into the sculpture.

For this large 3D-printed sculpture, I made an aluminum base in my metal-working studio. It has a reflector countersunk into the aluminum base (and yes, you can get to the light to replace when needed).

I was looking forward to introducing some of these lighted 3D-printed sculptures at the art show Sculpture Tucson in early April, but it got canceled. So I still don’t know how people will really react to these lighted sculptures.

I do know one thing, though: they are cool!

Here’s a video of some of my other lighted 3D-printed sculptures:

Let me know what you think of them in the comments section below.
