Let’s get rolling ….

SCOTTSDALE STUDIO TOUR UNDER WAY, DOWNTOWN PHOENIX SHOW IMMINENT

Hidden In The Hills, the Sonoran Arts League’s amazing 17th annual studio tour, resumes Friday, November 29 and runs through Sunday, December 1. The tour of 47 studios with 167 artists opened November 22. “These two three-day weekends flanking Thanksgiving are a great time for people to get out with friends and family and see where artists live and work,” says Kevin.

Kevin is showing both his Fine Art and Home & Garden lines. “I usually just have my fine art sculptures at shows or my Home & Garden line, which includes outdoor pieces like my bugs and ocotillos,” Kevin says. “So this is a little unusual for me.”

He has some exciting new sculptures at Bowman Studios (studio #25), where you can also see the art of Barbara Bowman (acrylic), Vickie Morrow (ceramics), Lynn Ballinger (fine jewelry) and Julia Patterson (pastels).

BH Bowman Studios is in north Scottsdale – here’s a map. For more information and a customizable map, click here to visit the Hidden In The Hills Web site.

On the heels of Hidden In The Hills is a show that sneaked onto the schedule. “Fiasco: The Art of Failure” is an exhibition of works that artists feel have failed in some way. “I was intrigued when first asked to participate,” says Kevin. “While I don’t have many pieces that I consider utter failures – I’ve only cut one apart over the years – I do have pieces that turned out differently than I had seen in my mind’s eye.”

One of those is Tess. In translating a two-dimensional drawing of a 4-cube tesseract to three dimensions, the piece deviated from the literal form. Nonetheless, it is beautiful in its own right.

Tess will be included in the exhibition at the Frontal Lobe Gallery, which is inside the historic Bragg’s Pie Factory in downtown Phoenix at 1301 Grand Avenue. Please join us for the show opening reception on Friday, December 6. It runs through Friday, December 20.

‘MACRO/MICRO’ ENDS SUCCESSFUL RUN

After a nearly two-month run, “Micro/Macro: The Sculptural Art of Kevin Caron” closed on Saturday, October 26. “I’m very pleased with the show and its reception,” says Kevin, who connected with several YouTube viewers as well as many other new and established fans who appreciate his sculptures. “This location drew East Valley people who don’t often go to central Phoenix shows,” Kevin observes.

The sculpture Street Urchin Twin 2 sold at the show, going home with an art lover who became familiar with Kevin through the Friday, October 18 Brandeis National Committee, Phoenix Chapter at his studio. “I loved this studio tour,” Kevin says. “Attendees were really interested and asked great questions. And it was fun that they could go out to Chandler and see the show, too!”

PHOENIX MAGAZINE ARTICLE COMING IN JANUARY

The wonderful folks from Phoenix Magazine dropped by to interview Kevin and take some photos of him with Aspire and Fuego (right) for an article that will appear in the January 2014 issue of this popular Valley publication.

“Everyone at Phoenix Magazine is such a pleasure to work with,” says Kevin. “And photographer Brandon Sullivan had some great ideas for photos. I look forward to seeing the results and reading the article by Niki D’Andrea!”

UNDER WAY IN THE STUDIO

With Inari, the sound sculpture, completed and installed (check out its striking finish on its own page), Kevin is now working on another commission. Lady Bugme, a fanciful ladybug, will feature a bug zapper as her heart, as does Bug Man. “I have a lot of fun with these sorts of whimsical sculptures,” Kevin says.

Although Lady Bugme is front and center because of deadlines, Kevin continues to work on a sound sculpture, with a dramatic flowing base. “Fitting the pieces for it gives me a nice break every now and then,” Kevin muses.

Meanwhile, Kevin has completed the tabletop sculpture based on the geometric form the 4-cube tesseract. It is now named Tess (see red sculpture above). “This sculpture just fascinates people,” Kevin says. As you can see on its Web page, it can balance on any of its exterior balls. “This gives viewers many other ways to look at a single form.”

Kevin’s experience with Tess has inspired him to create a more faithful version of the 4-cube tesseract, albeit one more than twice as large. This one will not be mounted the same way, providing Kevin with the sort of challenge he just can’t resist …. Watch it develop on its own page.

Although it didn’t take place in the studio itself, Kevin recently sold and installed The Runner at a private residence in Scottsdale. “I had a lot of interest in this sculpture,” Kevin says of the work that debuted at “Micro/Macro” in September. “It was very gratifying for me to see that others shared my passion for this piece, and I’m happy it has found a good home.”
