How do you move 1,000 pounds of steel from the ground onto a trailer? Yes, it’s finally time to load the 9-foot tall, 10-foot wide sculpture Wherever You Go, There You Are onto the trailer for delivery to Tucson, Arizona, two hours south from Kevin’s studio in Phoenix where it will be on exhibit at Pima Community College East Campus. In this how-to video, Kevin invokes the wisdom of the Egyptians to get the job done. With the help of buddies Mark and Mike, he raises the sculpture on a hydraulic lift plate (what was once an in-ground car lift is now repurposed for lifting art). They slide the sculpture onto the lift plate, then back up the trailer to the plate, and raise the plate to the same level as the trailer bed. Kevin then uses 1/2″ schedule 40 PVC tubing to roll the sculpture onto the trailer. Once the sculpture is on the trailer, they center it over the wheels, then remove the PVC. Next, they strap the sculpture down to the trailer. Kevin explains how they alternated the strap ratchets to get the best hold. Next stop: Tucson!
