At the end of a sailing trip from Athens to Venice, Kevin went right to the box office for the Venice Biennale 54th annual art show. One of the world’s major contemporary art exhibitions, it takes place every other year. “This was an amazing opportunity to see the work of today’s most important contemporary artists,” Kevin explains.
The show features art from 88 countries around the globe.
The Others, by Maurizio Cattelan at the Biennale
For two days Kevin combed the two main locations, the Arsenale and the Giardini, as well as the venues scattered throughout Venice.
“It was an incredible experience to find art in almost every corner of the city,” says Kevin. “It made Venice, which is always inspiring, even more exceptional.”
If you’d like to go (the show runs through November 27) or would like to see some of the exhibits virtually, visit the Biennale art show site.
“The garden is one of a kind, and so is each bug,” Kevin says. The Garden, which has been helping visitors understand, protect and preserve the desert?s natural beauty for more than 70 years, is the second most visited attraction in Phoenix.
PROJECTS UNDER WAY IN THE STUDIO
Three midsized sculptures are currently at the sandblaster, being prepared for their individual surface treatments.
One of the three is the commission Perceptual Motion(below). “I’m very pleased with the form of this piece,” Kevin says. After surface preparation, the sculpture will receive a patina.
Perceptual Motion, in process
Also nearly ready for its final treatment is the sculpture Sanctuary. Most of Kevin’s work is noted for its simplicity, but this piece has multiple layers. “The complexity will definitely influence the finish,” observes Kevin.
The third sculpture awaiting its surface treatment now has a name: Reach. This piece will likely be painted, much like Charmed.
Meanwhile, Torrent, Kevin’s latest three-dimensional one-sided sculpture, is still getting its patina. And the as-yet-unnamed spike sculpture is slowly wending its way upward. You can see how far it’s grown so far – Kevin will add height to it as it develops.
Finally, Kevin is creating an aluminum bowl on his lathe. He is also interpreting yet another optical illusion on his mill. “I am getting increasingly comfortable with what these two pieces of equipment can do,” Kevin says.
Kevin prefers to work on the lathe and mill in the afternoon, when temperatures in Phoenix exceed 100 degrees. “It’s a cooler way to wind down the day,” he says.
WEB SITE INSIGHTS
Kevin’s new Web site, launched last month, has been very well received. Like other visitors, Phoenix coach, author and speaker Andrea Beaulieu commented on the site’s look and organization. “The home page is very clear and classy,” she says. “I also like how the fine art and home and garden sculptures are clearly presented.”
On the site, Kevin’s videos, which primarily focus on how he creates his work, have their own section. “It’s easier to find whatever you want to see now,” Kevin says.

The first will be a gracious, intimate event. Kevin is appearing at LON’s Artist-in-Residence series on Sunday, October 16. The event takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the patio of LON’s restaurant at the historic Hermosa Inn.
We also look forward to seeing you at Magic on Main, a celebration of Pearson & Company’s 20th year on Main Street on Scottsdale’s Gallery Row. This will be a party! The show opens on Thursday, October 20, from 7 – 9 p.m., and there’s an encore on Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. – noon.
In addition to Kevin’s sculptures, musical guest and YouTube phenomenon Obadiah Parker will be playing. The paintings of Susan Osborne and jewelry of Azealea Decor will also be featured.
The event benefits the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center, which advances research and provides a lifetime of support for individuals with autism and their families.
