WHAT’S NEW?

The Vine Fence has a new name and a new status. After six months of focus and work, the Vine Fence is finally complete. Its 11 panels, which include a gate that secures with a magnetic latch (how appropriate for a metal gate!), is currently at the powder coater, where it’s getting a protective coat of rich brown. (If you’re curious about powder coating, read on!)

At the same time, the “fence” was christened by Kevin with the name Tenacity. That aptly describes any vine that lives in the Arizona desert, not to mention the determination of its creator.

The second phase of the project, the creation of double swinging gates to matchthe decorative railing, is slated to begin in the fall.

We’ll definitely keep you posted here and on the Web site at www.kevincaron.com, which we update often.

A rather large chunk of onyx followed Kevin home from the quarry, and what a beauty it is! You can see a photo of it in the In the Works section of the site, but to actually see the real thing is something else. The rock has a series of inner chambers that channel the water to at least three different openings about two inches down from its top. This is going to make a magnificent fountain, and one couple already has their eye on it ….

WHAT’S WHAT?

What is powder coating?

Although you may not be familiar with the term powder coating, you probably use items every day that are treated with this process. They include patio furniture, motorcycle gas tanks, railings and other objects that can benefit from a protective surface that resists chipping, scratching, fading and general wear and tear. The coating also comes in a variety of colors and finishes.

Before powder coating, however, the surface is usually sandblasted to remove all foreign materials and especially rust. While Tenacity was under construction, Kevin applied WD-40 (that “WD” stands for “Water Displacement”), preventing rust from invading, despite Arizona’s generous spring rains.

Unlike paint, powder coating is applied dry. Each item is sprayed with an electrostatically charged powder of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, then placed in a curing oven, where the powder is fused into a continuous, hard film. According to the Powder Coating Institute, powder coating is the fastest-growing finishing technology in North America, representing over 10% of all industrial finishing applications.
