So Close was commissioned by Bob Orton for his La Jolla estate, which is home to many amazing sculptures. The stairs rise out of the ground and into the world.
So Close was originally installed on a hill along the drive near the entrance gate, where this photo was taken, right after installation. Soon after, it was moved to a lower garden, which is just as close to the sky (second photo.)
This was the first piece with the patina learned from Gary “Ironstone” Johnson, a generous mentor.
How fitting, to flow to another great mentor, Bob Orton, whose direction and support has been priceless.
