A VERY SPECIAL PIECE JUST FOR YOU -
HOW COMMISSIONS WORK

Sculptor Kevin Caron sees commissions as an opportunity to create sculptures that relate to the people, places and purposes they complement. His perspective makes commissions a pleasure.

The process is simple:

IN THE BEGINNING
A commission usually starts with an email to info@kevincaron.com or a call to the office at 602-952-8767.

Kevin can talk with you on the phone to better understand your goals and preferences, or he's glad to meet with you in person. He also likes to come to your location to get a feel for its light, space and tone. "Sometimes I just 'see' a sculpture in a location," Kevin says.

In some cases, people know where they want a piece to be sited; other times, they want Kevin to choose a spot. We also usually take some photos of any possible locations.

During this complimentary meeting, Kevin likes to learn more about your interests and preferences. Do you have an affinity for water? Sound? Color? Would a kinetic piece be appropriate?

There are also practical questions, such as whether there is a special event coming up or a milestone birthday or anniversary.

Understanding the big picture helps Kevin as he approaches the design phase. If you have a specific budget, that also is helpful to know.

GETTING IT ON PAPER Sculptor Kevin Caron working with his CAD program, Alibre
With an understanding of the aesthetic and other goals, Kevin begins the design process. While every project is different, he usually uses Alibre computer-aided design software to develop what he "sees" in his head. He may create one or more designs, depending upon the project.

The design or designs are then often incorporated into the photos that were taken earlier to give you the best possible idea of how the sculpture will actually look when installed.

Kevin then meets with you to share the design. He also can put designs in a private viewing area on his Web site so that you may see the images at home and work, or show them to other people, wherever they live.

Being able to see how the sculpture will look allows you to communicate with Kevin about color, size, position and other considerations. Although Kevin maintains his artistic vision, sometimes such feedback can lead to a better piece. "Owners' knowledge of a site can be really helpful," he explains.

MAKING IT REAL
Once you have agreed upon a design, Kevin puts together a proposal for you that clearly outlines the concept, creation and installation of your new sculpture, including your payment schedule and the time it will take to create the piece.

As soon as the final agreement is signed, Kevin establishes a date-based timetable for completion.

While Kevin is working on your sculpture, you are welcome to visit his studio and see the work's progress. He also will keep you updated via his Web site, where you can see and sometimes even watch and hear your piece coming to life. As your installation time nears, Kevin confirms the schedule and location for that important event.

Finally, it's time to put your sculpture in place. Unless other arrangements have been made, Kevin and his team handle the site preparation, installation and clean up.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does it take?
Project schedules depend upon what Kevin is already working on as well as the size and complexity of your piece and availability of materials. Most sculptures, however are completed within two months.

How does the payment process work?
Usually there are three payments: one upon final agreement, one halfway through the project, and the final one upon installation.

What's the most surprising thing about commissions?
Many people assume having a unique piece of art created especially for them is beyond their reach. With sizes ranging from tabletop to monumental sculptures, however, the cost of a commission can be more reasonable than you might expect.

Can I see other commissions?
Commissions Kevin has completed include:

BackFlip, a commissioned sculpture by Kevin CaronBackFlip - an outdoor sculpture

Isadora - a kinetic garden sculpture

Mighty Owl Oak - a public outdoor sculpture

Hands On - a public outdoor sculpture
