On a balmy 105 degree August day, Kevin is finally ready to apply the finish to his 9-foot-tall sculpture Wherever You Go, There You Are, which he has been working on for seven and a half months. First he and his “shop elf” have to move the sculpture out of the studio on a wheeled cart, squeaking through the doorway with minimal clearance. Next, although he has been doing final finish work for weeks, now that the sculpture is in the light, he sees a few more touch ups before he applies the two-part “secret sauce” to the sculpture’s steel surface. During the application of the first liquid, which cleans the scale off the surface of the steel, he notices pen marks that have to be ground off. Kevin and his helper then turn the sculpture around to let the sun help the process on the opposite side. After applying one more coat of cleaner, all of the scale is removed and the sculpture is ready for its finish. Kevin then sprays the second liquid on the surface of the sculpture, instantly oxidizing (rusting) it.
